After a good trip around our property in Romania, I have a few preliminary harvest reports for shareholders.
In Oravita, the rapeseed was particularly affected by a harsh winter, but the yield has still stayed within budget. The harvested was completed on 4 July – 760 Ha with a yield of 3.2 t/Ha.
The wheat harvest started on 23 June and was completed on 12 July. We have used a new variety that matures a little like winter barley, but which is a much better commodity. The yield from the 2100 Ha of 6.4 t/Ha was better than budgeted (6.0 t/Ha).The winter crops have stalled due to a lack of water, and unfortunately, there is no prospect of any rainfall. This means that a small area of oats is ready for harvest next week, and the maize and sunflower, which has also been affected by the drought, will now be ready in August.
After the great challenges with the combine harvesters last year, we sold 2 and replaced them with 2 hired machines that harvest wheat and rapeseed and together with our own 2, they make a good combination.
In Videle, a large area of winter crop was sown early and it had an excellent overwintering with a good covering of snow during the winter.
Up until now, 325 Ha of rapeseed has been harvested with a yield of 3.3 t/Ha and 525 Ha of wheat with 7.2 t/Ha. Rainfall has been good, so both soybeans and sunflowers are doing well.
In Amaru, the harvest has only just started and it is very wet here, like in autumn. After a hard winter, with lots of geese and too much water in the spring, it is all expected to affect the yield negatively for winter crops.
Up until now, 165 Ha of rapeseed has been harvested with a yield of 3.0 t/Ha and 190 Ha of wheat with 5.0 t/Ha. Both fields have been severely affected by geese, so we hope, particularly for the wheat, that the prospect will be for a higher yield.
However, the large amounts of rainfall have benefited the spring-sown cereals, as there are more this year than usual. We have sunflower, maize and as something new, 100 Ha of barley, which is to be delivered to a malt house in the area.
The damage caused by the heavy rainfall has clearly been limited by the many channels that have been cleaned and dug the last 5 years.
As I mentioned at the beginning, this not the final result of the harvest, but only what we know at this time. We will send out an update when we get a little further along in the season.
I wish you all a great summer.
Yours sincerely,
