Weather conditions in the spring has been such, that it was very wet, with very few days with the possibility of spraying and fertilizer spreading. Then – in late April – was there a couple of weeks with extremely high temperatures and burning sun, that made the last part of the work to a great challenge, especially in Oravita.
This meant that winter crops began to be depressed by the drought, and the germination of spring crops was slow in coming. Around 20 May came finally the rain, and helped much the situation, so we now have wheat and rape in a state from satisfactory to very nicely, and one winter barley field of 210 HA with areas characterized by drought, but otherwise a reasonably acceptable mark, however, not expected to peak yields due to drought.
Since 20 May the weather has actually been quite fine, with comfortable high temperatures and rain in between. We’ve got 70 to 110 mm of rain the last three to four weeks.
Spring crops – corn – is now germinated everywhere. As shown in the pictures above there are quite dissimilar sizes of corn plants within the same field, giving some challenges with regard to plant protection. As the weather is right now, growing corn, of course, really well, but it is still crucial to the yields in corn, what the weather will be for the remaining growing season.
So winter crops have – albeit with certain challenges – all overwintered in a satisfactory manner, and is doing at present satisfactory, and spring crops are germinating and thriving right now, but there are quite large differences in plant size in the fields. The other spring work is now also “up tp date”, so the current status is thus overall quite satisfactory.
It is still too early to say anything about yields, but we have run the first test laps with combines, and this suggests that there may be acceptable yields of both wheat and canola.
